Hellenic Police Strengthen Protection In Response to Demonstrations Against Israel Passenger Liner

Greek authorities have significantly increased safety arrangements at multiple key ports in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from targeting a passenger ship carrying Israeli tourists on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Increased Security

These protective measures at the Peloponnesian ports was implemented following recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata recently. Earlier, travelers aboard the identical ship were prevented from disembarking and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after community members organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"Despite the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," commented an educator who participated in the Kalamata rally. "Innocent, unarmed civilians are being slain."

Passenger Experience and Public Sentiment

From the upper deck, tourists witnessed as demonstrators in Kalamata chanted: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who spent the summer organizing peace demonstrations across Greece, stated: "Citizens of Israel who approve of the policies of their government aren't accepted here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

Constantine Filis clarified: "Due to close location and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the typical Hellenic citizen is more responsive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a complex circumstance," he added. "Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an associate than it is for many European nations."

Economic and Travel Implications

National figures reveal that over 600,000 Israeli visitors came to Greece in 2024, with estimates of increased visitation this year. This significant arrival underscores the much-improved relationship between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Strategic Partnership and Geographic Factors

Regarding Hellenic administration, Israel constitutes not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also offers the additional advantage of enhanced political entry to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its ties with Israel," remarked Filis. "But from a ethical standpoint we must be more accepting, more equitable, more resolved to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The scale of the Greek demonstration campaign has surprised Israeli authorities. In recent months, the state's external affairs office warned visitors to keep discreet, while national news outlets described Athens as a "paradise lost" due to protest markings emerging on structures in the city center.

Victor Eliezer of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece voiced worry: "Naturally we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can so easily become discriminatory."

Upcoming Developments and Requests

Increasingly, opponents have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people lately went to Crete to request the closure of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO facility that following the start of hostilities in Gaza has operated as a crucial replenishment point for US aircraft carriers, military jets and vessels headed to Israel.

"We have achieved successes," announced Petros Constantinou. "Our main demand, currently, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
