At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Gangs
A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.
