At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
