An Prediction Market Trader Profited $Nearly Half a Million from Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Market Movement in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Intensifies
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Market Background
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
